Surat Makes Waves with National Water Award
Surat has once again proven its commitment to sustainability by winning the prestigious National Water Award 2023 for Best Urban Local Body, further cementing its position as a leader in urban water management. This recognition comes after Surat’s recent accolades in cleanliness and air quality management, showcasing its holistic approach to urban development. The award, announced by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, was presented to Surat Mayor Dakshesh Mawani and Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agarwal by President Droupadi Murmu on October 22, 2024. It acknowledges Surat’s innovative water conservation initiatives, particularly the successful Tertiary Treatment Plant (TTP), which treats and reuses wastewater, saving 110-115 MLD of potable water annually and generating ₹141 crore in revenue.
The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has pioneered efforts in comprehensive wastewater management, groundwater recharge systems, and promoting rainwater harvesting. With over 4,600 groundwater recharge systems installed citywide and 34 lakh trees planted, Surat’s multi-pronged approach has yielded significant water conservation benefits, including a one-foot rise in groundwater levels in specific areas.
The Ministry of Jal Shakti’s Department of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation (DoWR, RD & GR) initiated the National Water Awards to promote water conservation awareness and recognize best practices in water sustainability. With 38 winners across 9 categories, these awards contribute to the government’s vision of a “Jal Samridh Bharat” (Water-Enriched India).
Surat’s focus on sustainable water management extends beyond environmental impact – it strengthens the city’s appeal as a destination for both tourism and investment. This prestigious award places Surat in the spotlight, drawing attention to its progressive initiatives, eco-friendly infrastructure, and innovative urban solutions. These developments not only boost the city’s profile but also create a foundation for lucrative business opportunities, particularly in the hospitality and real estate sectors. As Surat continues to gain recognition for its sustainability efforts, more travelers are drawn to its eco-conscious landscape, and projects like “The World” stand to benefit significantly from this increased interest. Higher occupancy rates at “The World” directly translate into greater returns for investors, with assured returns, revenue sharing, and additional opportunities. This accolade further cements “The World” as a prime investment option in Surat’s flourishing tourism-driven economy.
In conclusion, Surat’s victory in the National Water Awards not only highlights its innovative approach to water management but also underscores its burgeoning potential for investors and tourists. The city’s holistic commitment to environmental sustainability ensures long-term urban growth, solidifying Surat’s standing as a leader in urban development and global tourism.
